In 2013 Morpheus and the VU University Amsterdam worked together on a Network Institute project. We asked Dr. Irma Borst from the department of Organization Science at the VU to investigate research questions about online knowledge sharing within and between organizations, to help Morpheus with the development of our knowledge sharing tool Kamala. The results of that study are a number of recommendations for people starting and managing online communities that collaborate on knowledge.
Benefits of online knowledge sharing include easy integration for newcomers, improved collaboration between geographical dispersed people, exploration of new knowledge and exploitation of existing knowledge. Our research suggests that you clear guidelines on type of knowledge and confidentiality, a supportive organizational culture and user-friendly tools to make your knowledge sharing experience a success.
How to get your employees motivated? That depends on your purpose: for supporting routine tasks, you’ll want a static, structured knowledge model which you control. Start with an open, dynamic structure if you want your users to be creative with their knowledge and avoid controlling the situation.
Kamala is such a user-friendly knowledge sharing tool. Once the knowledge structure is set up, users can start sharing and acquiring knowledge immediately because of Kamala’s ease of use. Users will know what types of knowledge can be shared by just looking at their dashboard: you have already placed the most important topics there. If you want to stimulate creative thinking, allow your users to change and add to the knowledge structure itself. With Kamala, you can also assign roles to users with less privileges for a more controlled application. Kamala’s Smart Suggestions stimulate the reuse of information already entered in your knowledge map to eliminate clutter.

In 2005, Morpheus was involved in some projects (with the Dutch tax office and Police amongst others) which required additional functionality from Ontopia. We decided to develop tools on top of Ontopia, specifically for editing topic maps. Inspired by web 3.0 and the web development technique Ajax, the editor became interactive with a smaller footprint. We have just published a Google Chrome extension for the Kamala Bookmarker, available here.
The WeLike2Know Bookmarker is an add-on for Kamala and combines information from any website with your knowledge structures.
- Add important notes and relations from existing websites into your knowledge space in the cloud
- Save and share your observations and remarks with your friends and colleagues
When you have filled your knowledge space, just install the Kamala Bookmarker in your browser. The bookmarker connects Kamala with a website by using a URL in your knowledge map as Subject Identifier.
In the Bookmarker all relevant structured knowledge is shown, just as you have defined in your knowledge space. It is very easy to add information you see on the website in the Bookmarker, just start typing and Kamala will help you by providing smart suggestions.
